Sputum Procedure Billing and Rate Update Effective for dates of service on or after April 04, 2005, CPT–4 code 89220 (sputum, obtaining specimen, aerosol induced technique) is no longer billed “By Report,” and also is exempt from the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) edits.
