Message code CO-119 and CO-35 reporting issue

September 29, 2015

An issue has been identified on claims when a member has met his or her benefit maximum, however, there is no patient responsibility for the specific service. The correct provider liability is being transmitted on the 835 remittance advice; however, the incorrect message code is being reported. Claims that are being reported as CO-119 or CO-35 should actually be CO-45. The CO-119 and CO-35 message codes may have triggered your billing system to send bills to patients in error for dollar amounts that are provider liability. A fix for this is being tested at this time with deployment planned for November 19, 2015. In the interim, Regence encourages providers to review their billing system for incorrectly reported message codes CO-119 or CO-35 and adjust them to provider liability so that the patient no longer receives a bill for these services.
