California Optometrists to Order Laboratory Tests
January 1, 2009The passage of Senate Bill 1406, which takes effect on January 1, 2009, amended the Optometry Practice Act to allow California optometrists to order the following laboratory tests for the diagnosis of conditions or diseases of the eye or adnexa:
- Smears
- Cultures
- Sensitivities
- Complete blood count
- Mycobacterial culture
- Acid fast stain
- Urinalysis
- X-rays
- Other types of images (subject to prior consultation with an ophthalmologist or appropriate physician and surgeon)
